Beaches

North Tyneside has an award-winning coastline giving you the chance to go and have fun on four beautiful golden sandy beaches.

Whitley Bay beach is in the shadow the Spanish City Dome and the Links, with an art gallery, café and leisure centre nearby. There are great walks to be had along with award-winning ice cream and fish and chips, and stunning views of St. Mary’s Lighthouse.

Further down the coast you can relax on Cullercoats Bay - a small sheltered beach enclosed by small piers which is ideal for families. It is a perfect place to spend some time without being too far from facilities like a fish and chip takeaway, café, pub and Metro station. Many famous artists made Cullercoats their home and their works can be seen in galleries around the world, including The Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle. You can download this guide to their work and stand in some of the very places they painted and worked from - Cullercoats Art Walk.

Tynemouth Longsands is one of the most popular beaches in the country and offers an amazing landscape. It has also been voted 4th best beach in Britain and 12th best in Europe. Take a surfing lesson or watch experienced surfers catch some waves then have a coffee and snack at Crusoe’s Café on the beach. You could walk into the village to browse the shops or see the Tynemouth Station Market at weekends.

King Edwards Bay is a small sandy beach at the foot of Tynemouth Priory and Castle – a spectacular historic backdrop.

You can have fun on our beaches all year round but there are one or two events you might like to get involved in. The annual Whitley Bay Sandcastle Competition takes place in July - there's a big beach volleyball tournament on Tynemouth Longsands and Newcastle Falcons hold an annual touch rugby tournament that month too.
